My family got a new board game and since we have a laser cutter I thought I'd go to Thingiverse and find a dice tower to cut. We have never used a dice tower before. I found this simple, no frills, but functional, dice tower
Our laser is an Xtool M1 enclosed 10W diode laser. I downloaded the .svg file from the download section and cut it out. I glued it together and we tried it with the dice our new game came with.
We liked it but the sound of the dice going through the Tower was loud! I muffled it by gluing some felt on each ramp and in the catch basin. That quieted the noise of the rolling dice. Then the catch basin was loose and kept moving so I ended up gluing that stationary.
It worked very well at this point and we did like the way the dice no longer go flying everywhere from enthusiastic throwing. We put together a castle looking tower and just love the way it came out. Oddly enough, my son got a set of metal dice that are super cool but they are too large for the fancy tower. This tower has plenty of room for them so he uses this one with those dice.
As a first dice tower, I think it was a good project. I learned a lot about what makes a good dice tower that works for my family. This one also was nice because it could easily be passed around or I could make one for each person. It can also be personalized by laser engraving an image on all that flat space. I could also laser engrave and cut a badge to attach with glue. Maybe one day I'll design my own.
Happy Making!
Michelle
