Laser Cutter #004 - LED light box 02 (Summer 2023)

My sister gave me this pretty large paperweight as a gift. It has an iridescent translucent coating on the underside that made it perfect to shine some color changing LEDs through. Its heavy and needed a box to hold the LEDs. I talked about the electronics as part of the Humble Electronics #002 post.

This box was created using a free Inkscape extension that can be found on their website. I just added a hole in the top for the LEDs to shine through and a hole in one side panel for the power port. It's cut from 1/8 in (3mm) plywood. I also cut the insert to hold my LEDs in a triangle shape. There are some spare bits of wood holding the electronics off of the bottom of the box. The diffuser is a piece of Japanese rice paper glued inside the top.

This also glows constantly in my workspace. I might design a different box for it that fits the shape better and/or paint the box. It works fine as it is and proved I can cut the entire holder out of wood. If I had a more powerful laser, I could also cut this out of acrylic or maybe just the lid. This was just a little quick project as an after thought to the previous one. I will post on how to install and use the Inkscape extension in a future post.

Happy Making!

Michelle
